Dentistry, also known as dentistry and oral medicine, is a branch of medicine consisting of the study, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases, disorders and conditions of the oral cavity (oral) and arrangement of teeth) as well as the oral mucosa and adjacent and related structures and tissues, particularly in the associated maxillofacial (jaw and facial) area.

Structure Of Dental Implants

Dental implants are made of three units that come together to form a full tooth.

1- The Root

The root in dental implants is made from titanium and is placed within the jaw bone. This metal is ideal because it fuses with the bone ensuring long-term anchor.

2- The Abutment

The abutment is a structure that is placed on top of the root to receive the crown. Typically, it is made from titanium and acts as a connecting unit between the crown and the root.

3- The Crown

The crown is the only visible part from a dental implant after placement. It comes in a range of material that meets different demands. The options alternate between budget-friendly and expensive. Some options for the crown in dental implants are more natural looking than others.

This depends on your price range and whether you’re getting the treatment for cosmetic or practical reasons.

Dental Implants Procedure

Dental implants is a procedure consisting of 4 parts and an additional step that not all patients need.

Part 1: General Treatment

Before starting with dental implant surgery, your doctor will examine your mouth and its health.  This includes x-rays as well to make sure there are no hidden issues.

Part 2: Bone Grafting (Not Always Necessary)

Bone grafting is only necessary before dental implants if you don’t have enough bone density. In other words, if your jaw is too weak to sustain an implant. In this case you’ll need a bone graft. A process in which your dentist takes bone tissue from a different place on your body and implants it in your jaw.

After 2-3 months, the graft should fuse with the jaw bone, and you should be able to continue with your procedure.

Part 3: Dental Implant Surgery

This step includes placing the root into the jaw bone. The entire procedure takes place from inside the mouth, so scarring isn’t an issue. Your dentist will make an opening on the gum and drill all the way towards the jaw bone. After creating enough area for the root, your dentist places the titanium root and sutures the area.

It takes up to 3 months for the bone to fuse with the root and become one structure. This process of healing is so important because it anchors the root permanently.

Part 4: Placing The Abutment

After your jawbone heals from the minor surgery, you’ll visit your dentist to place the abutment. The abutment is made from  titanium as well. To put the abutment in place, your dentist will open the gum until the surface of the root is visible.

Once the abutment goes on the root, your dentist then closes the gum but not over the abutment. Instead, the gum closed around the abutment.

Healing period is two weeks after this step.

Part 5: Placing The Crown

Initially you’ll have a temporary crown until your dentist orders a custom-made one for you. Of course, you can discuss the material of the crown and your most suitable options with your dentist.

After that, your dentist will take impressions of your mouth and send this data to a laboratory. This ensures that the lab design the perfect crown for you.

How Successful Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants success rate vary depending on various factors. Most importantly the skill and reputation of your dental clinic. But overall provided everything goes up to plan the success rate of dental implants averages at around 98%.

Dental Implants Cost

  • The country you get your treatment

Multiple teeth replacement

Multiple teeth replacement is a category of dental implants that looks to provide both cost-efficient and highly effective treatments.

Regular dentures are suitable if you have several teeth missing. You can opt for partial dentures to keep your healthy teeth. But full dentures are also available if you wish to remove the remaining teeth.

You should note the dentures aren’t suitable for permanent multiple teeth replacement. Due to the lack of implants, they don’t fix any health problems.

2- All-On-4 Dental Implants

All-on-4 dental implants are dentures with implants. You only get 4 implants per jaw which dentures are secured on. This gives you more security that traditional dentures and a host of other benefits.

Particularly since they involve dental implants as well. This makes them extremely suitable for multiple teeth replacement.

3- Dental Bridges

Consider dental bridges if you want to replace more than one tooth that are consecutive. Dental bridges come in many types, and they’re an economic alternative to individual implants.

Depending on how severe your infection is you may need 2-3 weeks of healing.

2- Bone Grafting (Not Always Necessary)

If your bone density is weak, and only then you may need a bone graft. Consider All-On-4 dental implants if you need this step but wish to you skip it.

Bone grafting requires 3-4 months of healing.

3- Implant Surgery

The implant surgery is when your dentist drills through your gum and inserts the implant. This step alone requires 3 months of healing.

4- Crown Placement

You can opt for instant crowns which are crafted immediately using the CEREC high-tech method. You also have the traditional method which usually takes 3 weeks to design and make your crowns.

How Do Immediate Implants Work?

The concept of immediate implants is to overlook the treatment period and get right on with the surgery. For instance, if you have an inflammation or an infected root, your dentist will treat this then immediately begin with implant surgery.

Because most patients don’t want to wait too long for their crown, you can opt for immediate placement of the crown.

With CEREC you don’t just get the temporary crown, you get a customized color-matched ceramic crown that works and behaves exactly like natural teeth.

Pros & Cons Of Immediate Implants

The pros of immediate dental implants are obvious. You get your smile in a day and it saves you months of treatment and numerous dental visits.

The crown is customized as per your dental measurements using the CEREC technology.

The cons of immediate implants are more about risks really. For example, usually patients wait until the root fuses with the bone before placing the crown. Incase it doesn’t fuse well, you only lose the costs for the surgery.

In any case these risks are extremely low, but if with the immediate implant your teeth don’t fuse with the jawbone, then you have to re-do surgery. And then you have to place the same crown again.

Are Immediate Implants Safe?

Several publishers studies show that there isn’t much difference between delayed or immediate implants. In fact, immediate implants add more benefits by shortening treatment time.

Overall they’re a very safe and time-efficient option.

All-on-4 Dental implants

All-on-4 Dental implants is a technology that replaces a fall jaw of teeth using only four dental implants per jaw. These dental implants are strategically placed to hold the denture of artificial teeth.

The procedure also goes by names such as the “one-day smile” owing to the fact you can get your all-on-4 dental implants in one day.

What Are All-On-4 Dental Implants?

All-on-4 dental implants are prosthetic units that consist of traditional dentures and placed on 4 dental implants. It’s a restorative treatment that enhances the aesthetic appearance of the mouth and restores dental functions.

Benefits Of All-On-4 Dental Implants

1- Cost Efficient

With the all-on-4 dental implants  replaces a full jaw of teeth, it only uses 4 dental implants. With traditionally methods you may need around 8 to 10 dental implants for a full jaw restoration. This considerably saves costs for you.

2- No Bone Grafting

Typically after losing teeth your jawbone loses bone density and becomes weak. This means that your dentist can’t immediately place the implant. So to add some strength to your jaw bone, you have to opt for bone grafting. This surgical procedure involves taking bone tissue from any area in the body and transferring it into the jawbone. The process requires 3 to 4 months of healing.

Which is a long period of time. The All-On-4 dental implants skip this process by having the unique inclined placement of rear implants.

Instead of the last two implants going horizontally, they are installed at an angle of 30°. This allows the jawbone to withstand the implant without the need for a bone graft.

3- Shorter Treatment Time

Typically, the entire procedure of implant placement followed by the placement of dentures is done in one sitting.

4- Natural Looking Results

Unlike dentures, all-on-4 dental implants have anchor and durable stability. They look and feel natural.

All-On-4 Dental Implants Procedure

The all-on-4 dental implants involves a minor surgery where your dentist drills through your gums to expose your jaw bone. Next comes the placement of the implants. Two dental implants will be implanted at an angle of 30° on each side of the jaw. And two implants will be near the front and placed vertically.

After placing all the dental implants your doctor will immediately install your temporary dentures. After sometime and when your implants heal, your dentist will place your permanent dentures.

How Long Do All-On-4 Dental Implants Last?

While dentures tend to only last 5 years, all-on-4 dental implants last for up to 15 years. This is because unlike traditional dentures, all-on-4 dental implants are anchored in the root. This ensures that you don’t lose bone tissue and hence that your artificial jaw doesn’t grow loose over time.

Of course, you can string a 15-year lifespan for your all-on-4 with good care after placement. Brushing and flossing is a necessity for your oral health. And likewise, to keep your all-on-4 implants viable.
